Boxing as exercise can achieve amazing results. And it’s not a boring grind, boxing is actually a very social and fun sport, especially with with K1Sport. Classes are usually made up of around 15 to 20 people and made up of an entertaining and challenging mix of various pad work and sparring.

Here’s some common boxing class questions:

What happens in a Boxing class?

A boxing class will normally start with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by about half an hour of boxing, and finishing with a 10-minute warm-down. Classes will teach you a range of effective punches, combinations, and defense — it’s about technique not strength. Boxing classes are a high-intensity, full-body workout that will keep you moving the whole time. When you’re not throwing a punch, you’re ducking and weaving — it makes you sweat, burning calories and making you stronger.

What benefits will I see?

Weight loss, increased agility and coordination, muscle tone, and greater fitness all result from boxing. Most people think that boxing is all about the arms but it is actually a cardio workout for the whole body. If don’t want to be big and bulky like a pro boxer, don’t worry. Boxing is very much a high repetition work-out so you’ll get muscle toning rather than muscle building. It’s also great for confidence and people really get hyped up during the class. While K1Sport”s boxing classes are aimed at fitness, not self-defense, you will be able to throw a decent punch by the end of the first class!

Is there anything to be cautious of?

Boxing classes are not dangerous, they are non-contact. Just be careful of your wrists – make sure it is straight and stiff, with the knuckles aligned with the wrist. Those at the beginner stage need to make sure they control their punches and don’t hit anybody!

I’ve never boxed in my life. Will I be able to do it?

Boxing is all about technique so once you pick up the moves you should be fine. If you’re not particularly fit then that’s not a huge problem. Anybody can box, it is easy to modify the exercise to suit everyone of all ages and fitness levels. It’s not just a sport for the guys either; women actually pick up the combinations faster than men and have more flexibility through their mid-section. The power of punches comes from the hips, not the arms. So anyone can throw a powerful punch.
